Vidal Sassoon, one of the original mods, passed away this week at the age of 84.
Three interesting things to know about Mr. Sassoon:
1. His pioneering hairstyles of the mid 1960s featured geometric cuts that were inspired by the Bauhaus architectural and design collective.
2. His first hair styling job was at a shop in a working-class London neighborhood, and young Vidal, dreaming of better things, took elocution lessons to rid himself of his cockney diction. Meanwhile, he joined a Jewish organization that battled in the streets with the Mosley-ites, anti-Semitic British fascists who were followers of Oswald Mosley.
3. In 1948, he traveled to Israel and fought in the war for its independence.
